Our Story
Home to Highlands since 2000.
DonLeon's is a beloved 'Home Cooking' Diner that has been a cornerstone of the Highlands, NC dining scene since 2000. The original DonLeon's Deli Cafe opened May 15, 2000 (currently Los Vaqueros). We had seven amazing years, but in 2007, we decided to retire and see the country in our motor-home (we changed our mind about joining the circus).
We ended up living near McAllen, TX for five years then near Austin, TX for another five years before coming to our senses and realizing that the only place we REALLY love was Highlands. So, here we are... back home where we belong. A lot older and wiser. I'm pleased to say that DonLeon has mellowed out nicely in his old age...you might like him even more now!
We realized that we are probably crazy, but we couldn't resist attempting to reprise the old DonLeon's in this beautiful new environment. Now at 80+ years young, DonLeon just wants to do what he loves for as long as possible. We want you to make this place your own and become a part of 'da family' as before.
You Old Timers will remember the House Rules a bit differently... they have been 'softened' to accommodate the newer and gentler DonLeon and our lovely, more upscale environment. It just didn't seem appropriate to have DonLeon throwing out our guests in this atmosphere. Besides...I'm not sure he's still up to it anyway (just don't provoke him).

You may be curious about our credentials...
Well, DonLeon, by way of legitimate trade, is an internationally recognized jewelry designer to many famous folk (Elizabeth Taylor, Bob Marley, Mickey Gilley, ZZ Top, Red Adair, etc.)... thus, his obnoxious comments regarding your glittery treasures. Oh yes, his name is Leon; the "Don" is a well-earned title acquired during a brief career in the underworld and recently highlighted by a new career on stage as an actor. He also teaches Pickleball.
By contrast, Susan has 30 years of dull but rewarding management of graphic design industries...not as exciting but someone has to be DonLeon's "straight man!"
